Do you mean connected as in, keep in touch? Then YES, it is definitely logical! ‘Networking’ is something that scientists do a lot. If I meet a scientist who is studying something similar to me or has some good ideas, then I will ask that scientist for his/her email address or phone number so that we can keep in contact, or maybe even work together on something! Most networking happens at conferences – big meetings of scientists, in which people do presentations on their work and chat to each other.
I went to a conference last year in France and met lots of other people from all over Europe who were studying crayfish! I got connected with lots of them – I still email many of them to ask questions or exchange results. I’m the only one at my university studying crayfish at the moment… so it’s good to know that there are other people out there doing the same thing 🙂
Do you mean connected as in facebook and similar social sites?
It certainly makes sense to do this as you should try to keep in contact with your friends! However, you need to be careful that you still meet up in person regularly rather than just relying on contact through a computer.
Compared to 20 years ago though it is much easier now to stay connected with people you know or work with.
Hi narty,
nice question. I think it is logical in a way…
I think there is emotional and physcological connections with friends. I think friends often share similar interests and something in common so friends have loads of good things they like to chat about 🙂
Hanging around people will allow each other to get to know each other better! And share some interests 🙂
Me too! Friends mean a lot to me…. a lot of my friends live in different places now, so things like facebook and skype are really handy! I think it’s important to make the effort to visit each other too though… which is fun, especially if they live in a different country cos it gives you an excuse to travel 🙂 This year I’ve been to Slovakia and Germany to visit friends, and I’m hoping to go to Germany during the summer to visit another one!

You should definitely keep in contact with friends!
Scientists study the way social contacts like friendships grow and develop – it is known as ‘network theory’: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_network
