To some extent, yes it does! I’ve become friends with a lot of the people I work with.. so we hang out outside work too. Every Friday, we have a seminar – when somebody in the department gives a presentation on their work… after the seminar, we all go to the pub together 🙂
Having social skills is actually pretty important in science… it’s useful to be able to network and communicate your ideas!
I still see loads of my friends from outside work though, who I know through school, or other jobs, or randomness!
Yes – I think it is inevitable that you will end up socialising with those you work with! Science is a bit different to other jobs though in that you have to make your own connections and decide whether to work as a team (nobody tells you to work with certain people – you decide who to work with). It is certainly easier to do science if you have clever people working with you – and even easier if they are also your friends!
Yes because I see work people (also friends) day in day out so sometimes if I want to do something – I just happen to ask them first! And our working hours are quite similar so easier to arrange things with them.
But I do have my friends visiting me from different places time to time but not as often. Or I go to Bath, London, Milton Keynes from Nottingham to see them but this is a long journey and requires planning 😛 so it doesn’t happen too often!!
But it doesn’t have to be a bad thing.. outside of work.. we talk about everyday stuff.. not just work like music.. sports.. going out etc 😛
