Hi Dior… when I was at school, I kept changing my mind about what I wanted to be! An artist, a French teacher, a scientist… i was always changing my mind! So, I didn’t make any firm plans. The only plans I made were to make sure I was doing something I enjoyed… I studied zoology for my degree and loved it and I’m enjoying studying crayfish for my PhD now – so my ‘enjoy life’ plan is going pretty well! Good luck with your plans, I hope it all goes well! 🙂

I think it is great to have a plan but you should make sure you have some flexibility in case you change your mind or if some other opportunities come along!

Have you thought about training and what you need to do to get onto hairdressing courses? Your school can probably help advise you with this.

When I was younger I didn’t know that I wanted to be a scientist (although I did like science) – I did know that I didn’t want a ‘normal’ job though. I knew I wanted to carry on studying and I planned things around this, and I guess I ended up just continuing to study the things that interested me until I am where I am now!

I am not sure I ever had a set plan like this. I only know that when I was at school I never thought I would be doing quite what I am doing now. Life’s full of surprises. It’s great to have a plan, we all need a goal we are working for. But our work can also take us an entirely different way that can also be good.

      Hi dior101,

Yeah I agree that it is good have idea of what you want to do but then you never know like the other scientists here, I have changed my mind plenty of times! I wanted to be a fashion designer then a business woman and now I am a biologist? How different is that?

Well if you are old enough- maybe you can ask around and try and get a few weeks worth of work experience in your local hair dressers and see if you really like the day-to-day stuff they do?
Of course, get permission from your parents first!!

Dior101, that’s great that you have such a strong idea of what you want to do as a career. I was never that sure. In fact, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do until about halfway through my PhD. Not a strategy I would recommend. 🙂 I agree a lot with the other advice — make sure you have some flexibility in case you change your mind. Being a hairdresser involves some chemistry so I hope you will get the chance to study this at school. You never know, you might start as a hairdresser and then go on to invent some new hair products or some crazy fun new hairstyles that science will help you perfect!
