Hi Charlotte and ashleigh!! Crayfish are found in both the northern hemisphere (e.g. Europe, North America) and the southern hemisphere (e.g. the island of Madagascar which is off the coast of Africa, South America and Australasia)…. so they have a very wide distribution! There are over 600 species of crayfish and they live in both warm and cold temperatures, although most prefer a temperate climate (like ours). Some species are very good at living in extreme conditions – I once found a signal crayfish frozen into a block of ice. When the ice melted, the crayfish started wriggling around again! Amazing!

In terms of where exactly you find them – crayfish live in freshwater (unlike lobsters, who prefer saltwater). So you’ll find crayfish in ponds, lakes, streams, rivers, and even swamps.

Hope that answers your question! 🙂
