The lyre bird! An amazing bird that can imitate any sound. If you get a chance, you have to watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjE0Kdfos4Y unbelievable!! The sounds it imitates at the end of the clip are quite depressing.
I also like frogmouths (google image them!) because they look crazy.
They are very graceful birds when in the air, but on the ground they are very big and clumsy. They are very heavy and can’t take off very well – they usually just jump off a cliff!
I saw one in a zoo once and it started performing a mating dance in front of my brother in law – he was quite embarrassed!
My favourite bird of all times is the cacapo :D. It’s really cute and fluffy. They live in New Zealand, and as many birds there they are flightless. They have become flightless with evolution over time because originally there were no predators. Now with the arrival of Europeans New Zealand has become infested with rats and cats. The cacapo is now highly endangered 🙁
My favourite bird is the roadrunner, though I don’t think they are as cheeky as the cartoon Roadrunner who winds up Wile E Coyote. They are fast, capable of speeds of 20mph, which is about as fast as our current world record sprinters. More about roadrunners here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geococcyx
@Edd and Nicolas, it’s funny that you should mention the condor and kakapo cos one of my old professors, David Houston, is an expert in both species! He was personally responsible for helping save the kakapo from extinction!! He developed a special diet that improved their egg production. Unfortunately he’s retired now but still graces the corridors of our zoology building (where he is very well respected!).
