      Hi mhchs15!

Growing up, I was always interested in animals… I used to love exploring rock pools at the seaside or dipping for tadpoles in my local pond. When I got a bit older, I started watching David Attenborough programmes (check out this for a clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjE0Kdfos4Y ) and I was hooked! I had so many questions… what’s the biggest animal? how do fish breathe? why are bats blind?

I wanted answers! So I decided to study biology at school. After that, I studied zoology at university… the more I learned, the more interested I became in animal biology! During my degree I went on field trips to Trinidad (where I saw hundreds of different animals and studied tree frogs: ) and Cyprus (where I studied sea turtles), which sparked my interest further.

After my degree, I decided to go back to university to do scientific research… and here I am! 🙂

One other thing… I’ve had some great science teachers and lecturers throughout my scientific for career. Without their encouragement and enthusiasm, I don’t think I’d be here today!

Looking back to when I was young I think I have always thought like a scientist! Science is all about having ideas and asking questions – I have always been insatiably curious about the world and have always wanted to find out new things and ask questions – this probably used to annoy my teachers, but is essentially the same thing that I do now.

I just kept on studying things until I ended up in the position I am in now where the science I do is still all about asking questions and thinking about new ideas. I didn’t really have a plan when I was younger to become a scientist – I just kept on doing what I enjoy!

Back when I was in school.. learning about cells. I have never thought about cells and what they do until then! But then I thought about it more.. we are made up of them and they do really clever reactions to keep us alive!!
I thought that is pretty amazing and how everyone is made up of cells (genes and same basic DNA pairs) but we all look so different and each have a mind of their own 🙂
