Work stuff or fun stuff? I’ll answer both briefly:
Work – New environmental lab facilities
Fun – Save some, spend some. Travel for sure. I would take a leave of absence from work and spend a year travelling the world. I’ve only seen a tiny bit of Africa and would love to see more. I have never been to South America or Australia properly, so definitely there too. And I’d visit some old friends, too. Toys? I have most of what I want already but I would definitely buy that Mini that I’ve wanted and I’d try my luck at rally driving. 🙂
I would put them away, save them and live on the interest … how boring, I know ;), but I have learned that saving money is also great for future generations, so I feel it’s the right thing to do.
I think I’d invest about half in the science work I am doing. I would try and use the money to get younger scientists into research. However, science is quite expensive – I recently got a grant for £500,000 with a colleague and this only pays for 1 scientist and 1 PhD student to do 3 years research!
I’d also spend half on a big house in the country to live in!
If it was for fun (not work!) then I would buy myself a nice house and then go travelling, like Christine! There are so many places I’d love to go… especially South America! I’d trek through the Amazon rainforest in Brazil, then the salt flats in Bolivia. I think I’d go to Costa Rica and volunteer at the sloth sanctuary there too (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pqio2G_Ra6g ). I’d love to see more of Asia – I’ve been to Thailand but want to see Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia and Laos!
A million pounds.. hmm I will save it and invest it to make more money so I can have more money for research and also take all my friends and family on a massive holiday somewhere – possibly a really exotic island somewhere and party!! 😛
