Nah, I jest 😆 I love science! I guess the only time I’ve cursed it is when I’ve been stressing out and studying for exams…. but even then, it was sitting exams that I hated, not science!
The only time I started to not enjoy what I was doing was when I was stuck in my PhD and couldn’t see how I would ever finish it (it happens to everyone!) However, I carried on working hard with it and completed the PhD. I have done lots more science research since then and still very much enjoy it!
Hate is much too strong a word. There were science classes I didn’t like but never science generally. Hopefully by talking to all of us about the sorts of things we do in science will give you an idea of what is out there beyond your lessons in school. This is one of the reasons I like running projects either instead of lectures or in addition to them.
There are students who are not great at classroom learning and exams, but do amazing project work. One of my project students is graduating this year. When he started with me, his marks were average. His skills as a project student pulled him up a full degree classification inside a year and a half. He just landed a job that will be very hands on, designing and constructing offshore renewable energy systems. It all leads back to finding that connection with project work.
The ONLY time when I didn’t like the fact that there’s so much going on in science was during REVISION – it was so hard trying to squeeze a years worth of lecture notes in my brain!! But I still love the science.. just not exams I guess 😛
Yes, it was last summer when I was still in the lab at 1 a.m. for the fourth night in a row stapling material samples to the wooden elements I used to put them in the environment. But that wasn’t really science, a monkey could have done that job (no offence to monkeys). So technically I didn’t hate science 😉 We just all have to realise that science is not always about doing smart and exciting stuff, it’s also hard work … and as we all know administration 😛
