When I was at school I didn’t make a definite decision that I wanted to be a scientist, although I did study science subjects (Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry…but not Biology!). I often had to go to careers seminars and things and I really had no idea what job I wanted to do – I just knew that I didn’t want a ‘normal’ job.

I guess it was only when I was at the end of my undergraduate degree and then doing my PhD that I decided I wanted to do science as a career. However, I always knew I would be interested in science (even if I wasn’t doing it for my job). I guess I am lucky that I can do something I enjoy for my job – not everyone can say that!

I decided I wanted to learn more about science (but not necessarily become a scientist) when I was 17 and about to finish school. I really enjoyed my biology class and chose to do zoology at university.

When I finished university, I decided to become a scientist and do a PhD. I was 22 years old.

I am not quite sure about that now, but it was definitely before I was fifteen … I remember because we had to do a vocational assessment in middle school, which I thought was really useless since I knew I was going to university to do science.

I think towards the end or mid-way of my A Levels!
When people asked me what I wanted to be I had loads of ideas and it kept changing until I started A level biology pretty much 😛
