      An organism is basically a general name for a ‘living thing’.

      So plants and animals are living things and are called organisms. So too are things like bacteria and fungus.

      There is some controvesy about whether viruses are organisms. Viruses are what cause lots of illnesses – they do reproduce like other living things but need a ‘host’ (e.g. your body) to do this.
