It has really bad breath – it’s spit/saliva is full of bacteria and that is how it kills its food. It bites them, then leaves them for a few days until they die from the infection, then it comes along and eats them – horrid!
I like komodo dragons which are found on islands in Indonesia. They’re really scary! But cool. The saliva of a komodo dragon contains deadly bacteria… even if a prey animal manages to escape the dragon, if it is bitten then it will usually die from a bacterial infection!
I also really like sea turtles! I spent a summer in Cyprus patrolling beaches to protect turtle nests – every summer, female turtles come on to the beach and dig nests where they lay their eggs. I saw lots of baby turtles and made sure that they got to the sea OK. It was amazing!
One of my best friends has a tortoise called Dill, he’s so cute 🙂 If I ever see dandelions, I try and pick them up, ‘cos Dill loves munching them.
Sea turtles are my favourite. I’ve only seen photos and videos, but I’m hoping to go swim with them when I go to Thailand in September. They are beautiful animals and they seem so chilled out and relaxed as they swim.
My cousins and I used to have little tortoise pets!! They were really cute!!
Hmm.. I don’t know too much about reptiles but definitely not crocodiles because they scare me after being to a crocodile park- we were allowed to feed them with bits of chicken tied to a stick (sort of like a fishing rod) and when one jumped up to grab my chicken – I felt like I almost went in with the chicken!! Since then I have been a bit scared of them!
Maybe a Chameleon that changes colour- always thought that is way cool – wish I can do that 😛
@Christine, whereabouts in Thailand are you going, is it for a holiday? I’ve been a couple of times, it’s amazing. Had Thai curry for dinner tonight 😀
@Zara, we haven’t decided yet. I am going to Bangkok to help teach a class on Persistent Organic Pollutants in the environment, so leaving 2 weeks early to add a holiday to it. We will probably do something by the sea (must see turtles!) but no idea what yet. Any recommendations?
Looads of rec’s! Bangkok is great but pretty suffocating after a while… so defo worth seeing more of Thailand if you can! In BK there’s plenty to see depending on what you’re into… lots of temples (Wat Pho was my fave, with a massive reclining bhudda), great food. good shopping (lots of cheap boutiques in Siam Square/MBK shopping centre) and markets. Outside Bangkok I visited Ayutthaya (a couple hours north of Bangkok) where I went cycling round the grounds of some temple ruins (absolutely beautiful: ). I then headed all the way up to Chiang Mai (I wouldn’t bother going that far though if you just have a couple weeks).
In the south, if you want to do cheap diving or snorkelling then there’s Ko Tao on the east coast… it’s a nice, fairly quiet island. I think the west coast is probably a lot better for that kind of thing though, I think you can see a lot more but it’s more expensive. There’s lots of diving on Ko Phi Phi (can also do a trip to see ‘The Beach’.). By far my favourite area though was Krabi. I stayed in a place called Ton Sai which is cheap and really famous for rock climbing (which you can do on the beautiful beaches: ). I’d strongly recommend it!
Other than that, if you want to see wildlife, Kao Yai National Park (north of BK) is brilliant. It’s the biggest national park in Thailand.
