I always liked science subjects, and my favourite was maths … I think because it is a very challenging subject, and it’s always a feeling of success when you realise that you finally understand a problem. Later I also liked physics, because physics relates maths to the real world. How I became a biologist and not a mathematician or physicist has to do with my desire to remain connected with nature, and biology is very rewarding in that way. I also got to do lots of maths and physics in my studies.

Like Nicolas I liked maths at school. Iliked spotting the patterns in numbers and knowing that there was only ever one answer to a question – subjects like biology always seemed much more ‘fuzzy’ and subjective as you could answer questions in different ways.

However, now the open-ended nature of a lot of ecological and biological problems is what interests me. I still get to use and develop my maths skills and knowledge but I can apply my ideas into new and interesting problems relating to animals and plants in the real world!

Like you, I used to love studying wildlife… because I think animals are very interesting! There were loads of questions I wanted answers to – do flying fish fly? do animals help each other? do they communicate? what happens when you move an animal to a new place? The list goes on! That’s why I decided to study zoology at uni, to get answers to some of those questions!

I also really enjoyed art and music at school. In art, I found painting really relaxing and fun. In music, I played clarinet and piano and performed in a school band.

My favourite thing at school was cell biology. In the textbooks I always see the pictures of cells in our body and then I take a look at my hand and I just can’t believe I am made up of them!!
And something so small, each have a ‘life’ of its own is also responsible for what we are like!!!
So that is why I love it and is still studying cell stuff!

I also like history- learning about what happened before I was even born and how the events that have happened made today how it is today!

Also art was great because it was the only time when I am allowed to draw/paint and chat to my friends all at once!
